It was a lot of work and but other scanning options were too expensive or slow. So I up loaded the shaky footage to google photos and used the stabilize feature on my Nexus 6p to make the video view-able. For those who want to transfer these sweet memories on film to a format that the next generation is more comfortable with, Hammacher has the perfect solution in the form of the Slide And. This new scanner was still shaky, but not as much as the first one. Preserving your favorite memories is always a good thing, and with the advent of digital cameras and computers, the film format looks to be entering its twilight years if it hasn't yet done so already. So after I scanned all of the little sections of film I put them together in a video editor to make movies for each reel. After I put it back together it was able to scan about 1/2 a 3" reel at a time, and on 5" reels it would stop about 10 times. I replace the take-up reel spring with a weaker one I found in my garage, and added some extra lubrication to the gearbox.
After I opened the case I could tell the gears in the gear box were binding up, and the spring tensioner that controls the take up reel was way to strong. Since I was pressed for time and trying to scan the films as a Christmas present I thought I'd open up the case and see if something was jammed. it was pulling the film on the take up reel faster than the film was advancing in the scanning mechanism, this would cause t he unit to only scan a few frames before stopping. The 2nd unit arrived and was not new as stated, and seemed to have a different issue. It has a solid 14 MP sensor, which, although it’s not the highest resolution of the Wolverine F2D Mighty and Wolverine Titan, is good enough to produce solid final images. I ordered a second unit hoping to get my 8mm's scanned. Lightweight and sturdy, the Hammacher Schlemmer Slide and Negative to Digital Picture Converter can easily digitize your old slides and negatives into JPEG files. So I returned the digitizer and received my refund. I contacted the seller and sent it back for a replacement and they told me to just return it for a refund and buy another one.

I think the problem was that the mechanics of the machine would not keep each new film cell aligned as it scanned, so the resulting movie was too shaky to watch. The first one I ordered seemed like it was going to be a great product but the scans turned out to be extremely shaky. I can't recommend this product unless you are a tinkerer that likes risk.
